Light Treatment!

I started light treatment about 3 months ago and it's really helped!
very happy with the results and my original shade of skin is coming back

Mainly have it on my hands, elbows, legs and around my eyes!

Has anyone else had light treatment? Has it work for anyone? has it not worked for anyone?

  • I can definitely vouch for treatment using light. Think it is one of the most effective methods available. the pic is progress on side of face. stick to it with dietary changes where advised.2472621595?profile=original

    • Hello Ben, it is nice to see the progress you have made with light therapy.

How long did it take you to achieve the results shown in the pictures?

Do you do this therapy at home?

How often and for how many minutes do you do this therapy?

Do you use any lotion or anything else on the skin besides the light therapy?

Is your vitiligo only on one side of your face?

      • Hi Syed

It does take a while to see these kind of results, about 4 months. The face (with the exception of the lips) seams to react and heal much faster than the rest of the body.

I do not have the therapy at home, I have to go to the hospital where it is administered under close supervision. The hospital recommended use is twice a week. I started off at 600mj and currently at 900mj. the highest I have ever seen administered is 1000mj. This is normally for like 15seconds.

I do not apply any lotions or anything else externally, although I am looking to see if i can get PC KUS locally (although i know that may be a challenge)

My vitiligo is spread out on the whole body. As i did not know what it was at the beginning, i let it spread quite extensively before i started treatment. Now I am trying to spread the word about what it is and treatment types available coz if i had treated it when it was a small blotch on my foot, it would not have been as extensive as it is now.

Hope that answers all your questions, feel free to ask for any clarification.

  • Hello, I tried the light treatment but it burned my skin. I got 2nd degree burns so i quite doing it. I just gave up on trying to get my skin color back. Im happy its working for you.

    • Carmen, I am sorry to know that you had a 2nd degree burn with the NB UVB light treatment. Were you doing this under some one's supervision? You have to be very careful with the timing of exposure. Any time you notice a little too much redness in your skin, you need to skip a session and reduce the exposure time.

You may like to give it another try but under a doctor's supervision. I have been doing this for the last 18 months and have been able to avoid getting any major burn.

      • This was done at a Dr.'s office

  • Hi

I was using UVB light for past 4 years and I think that is the best treatment as of now but this is not a permanent cure! for me white patches reappearing once stopped using light :-( and also time consuming !

I have tried all options and last year one doctor gave Ayurveda +  Steroid medicine and which did wonders that with in 3 months all white patches disappeared and started coming back in next 3 months time with more aggressively and this time same medicine didn't work !!

    • The more I study this disease, the more I makes more sense to me day after day.

      My guess is:

1- Phototherapy is really good, also time consuming.  But it treats from outside only.  You must address from inside too.   So, it re-pigments some patches but can not avoid new ones.

2- Steroid can really stop spreading, during the time you take it.  When you stop taking it,  patches re-appear.  Sometimes even faster.  It's not a cure at all, but it really slows down de-pigmentation.

3- Vitiligo is mostly a genetic pre-disposition to have melanocyte detachment.  It's usually triggered by  physical traumas/friction,  oxidative stress and emotional/psyco issues.

4- The only way to stop it from spreading is following a Functional Treatment www.vitiligomap.com/protocol.html

5- Even following a Functional Treatment,  because feet and hands are exposed to a lot of daily friction and traumas, they are hard to treat.

6- Hairy regions provide better response to any treatment, since they have melanocyte reservours (stem cells)  in their follicles.

7- Bone protuberant regions, like face, ankle, hands, knees, elbows are hard to treat too, since they suffer a lot of daily physical traumas.

8- Thick skin are also resistant to treatment, specially the ones based o cream absorption.

9- So, hand patches are the most difficult regions to treat because of the combination of all the unfavorable factors.

  • I have used UVB light and it worked for me. I have few spots on lip and on nipple which did not see any re-pigmentation. I went to dermatologist, she told me that I got re-pigmentation on other parts because those are all hair growing parts of the body since lip and nipple does not have hair we will not get re-pigmentation using this light therapy.

  • I will most likely be told by the my derm that the next treatment for me will be phototherapy.

What worries me is that all my skin will darken and the white spots will be much more obvious.  I'm very pale and I am very careful with exposure to the sun so I am able to limit the visibility of my vitiligo.  With phototherapy, it will be more obvious.  It's a catch 22!
