Tips for a vitiligo sufferer heading down south

Hi all,

I will be going to Cuba in a couple weeks - a last minute trip.  The last time I went down south was a few years ago and it was the first time I noticed the white patches on my face.  It looked like I had tanned unevenly...like as if I had not applied my sunscreen properly...but the patches were too white and I knew it could not simply be a case of uneven tanning.  I went to see a derma upon my return and sure enough, I was diagnosed on the spot with vitiligo.  So heading down south makes me apprehensive.

All this to say that I am nervous about going back.  I'm really looking forward to my vacation but dreading what it will do to my vitiligo.

Apart from the obvious : applying tons of sunscreen, wearing a hat and not sitting in the sun for long periods of time....does anyone have any advice for me?

How about sunscreen? Any specific type of sunscreen I should be using? I go for the highest one (in Canada it is 60). Is there a make that is better?

Thanks!

  • I have read multiple studies that day Vitiligo patients have less instance of melanoma. This does not infer that we can not get it but that extra precautions are not necessarily needed.
    • thank you.

But to be completely honest...I'm more concerned of what the sun does to me esthetically. I do not want my vitiligo to show even more than it does...so whatever sunscreen I should be using to minimise tanning is what I will use.

  • I have no idea what that is.

    Any sunscreens recommended?

    Sunblock or sunscreen?

    Anyone?

  • while you are there you should check out melaginina plus for vitiligo. I wish I could go and try it.
