Vitamin C - Friend or Foe?

Hi all,

I'm pretty new here and just getting to grips with all the info. Sorry if this has already been covered and I've missed it.

I've decided to start treating my vitiligo again (I stopped for a few years) and am trying to take on board lots of the advice I've found here.

One thing I'm a bit confused on is vitamin C: I wasn't sure if this was good or bad. Any wisdom on the topic would be appreciated :)

  • Dear Drew,

Most of doctors are suggesting vitamin c escalate the rate of depigmentation in vitiligo people,so better avoid this vitamin and citrus food from your daily routine life.

  • Omg i never knew this. Wow
  • Hi,
Vitamin C is good for everybody as it boosts our immune system and some say it also assists in pigmentation.
By this very reason we have to take Vitamin C but we have to do so in moderation.
A too much boosted immune system can run amok on our melanocytes. For example- Whenever I took lemonade or sweet lime juice regulary ( which all are rich in Vit C) my vitiligo patches escalated and increased in size.
So I will advice you not to take any supplements for supply of your daily requirement of Vitamin C.
Avoid taking citrus fruits in excess like lemon, sweet lime, grapefruit etc because they are very very rich in Vitamin C.
You can take other fruits like Papaya, strawberries, pineapple etc which can supply your daily requirement of Vitamin C without sending your immune system into overdrive.
Artichoke, asparagus, banana, carrot, celery, cucumber, green beans , pears etc are also good sources of Vitamin C for us as they contain only 6mg to 12 mg of Vitamin C that is about 10-20% of our daily requirement.
